Constipation is a common problem in infants with DS. The suspected reason is low tone in the abdominal region. While breastfed babies rarely experience constipation, sometimes the foods the mother eats can cause some problems in the gut of the baby. When we made the transition from breastmilk to solids, we saw some slowing of our daughter’s digestion. Along the way we have collected remedies to help bring relief to the baby. Here is my list of things that will help move the bowels.

This toy really motivated Arabella to press the large button-pad. It had vibration, visual stimulous (flying confetti in the dome) and a tinny music box rendition of Sesame Street’s theme song. It was loaned to us through her school’s Infant & Toddler Program and it was her favorite. Here she is in January 2009 exploring it for the first time.

Neatly folded in a small square plastic storage box is a list of remedies for teething and the remedies themselves. I have been keeping this box and my Helios brand First Aid Kit For Travelers close at hand for a good number of months, throwing them into my daughter’s diaper bag when we leave the house. When the right remedy is used, my baby girl gets rapid pain relief and her gentle sweet nature returns.
